The crime wrap from around the Charters Towers region this week.

A 31-year-old Townsville man has been remanded in custody after facing the Townsville Magistrates Court yesterday for a string of offences.

The offender stole a vehicle from an 84-year-old Kirwan man’s home late Friday night.

The keys to the vehicle were taken from the residence in a break and enter.

The man proceeded to drive the vehicle to Charters Towers where a tip off from a community member alerted police to its presence.

It was intercepted on the Flinders Highway, Dotswood at 1:20 yesterday morning.

The man was charged with the unlawful use of a motor vehicle as well as failure to provide a breath sample for analysis and subsequently driving under the influence of alcohol and unlicensed driving.

A search of the vehicle uncovered other stolen  property linked to a number of break-ins around the Townsville region.

He will re-appear in Townsville Magistrate Court today.

Charters Towers police say the community involvement was key.


The Charters Towers Showgrounds was broken into on Thursday night with a sum of money stolen.

The offender/s entered the show society office unlawfully and took the contents of a till.

Police are still investigating the incident and call for anyone with information to contact them or Crimestoppers.


The 3m long ‘All day breakfast’ banner was stolen from the Gill St McDonalds early on Saturday morning.

Between 12:30 and 2am the banner was taken from the poles holding it out the front of the store.

The offender/s climbed the poles to untie the ropes before running off with the banner.

Police are analysing council and McDonalds CCTV footage to assist the investigation.


A 45-year-old Charters Towers man has been fined for urinating in public after police found him near a Ryan St establishment.

During regular patrols focusing on drinking related offences officers saw the man urinating next to the licensed premises.

He was issued a ticket for $235.


A 48-year-old Charters Towers woman will face court later this month for drugs charges.

During a regular traffic stop on the Flinders Highway at Charters Towers, officers searched the woman’s vehicle finding drug utensils.

A used pipe was found inside the woman’s handbag.

She was charged with possession of a dangerous drug utensil and smoking a dangerous drug and will appear in Charters Towers Magistrate Court on March 21.


A 52-year-old Charters Towers man will face court after he was intercepted driving on the Flinders Highway, Dotswood on Saturday.

At approximately 12:45 officers stopped the Holden utility and subsequent checks showed the driver to be unlicensed.

The driver’s license had been SPER suspended for previous offences.

He will appear in Charters Towers Magistrate Court on April 4.


Two Charters Towers locals were caught drink driving in town last weekend.

The first, a 47-year-old woman, was intercepted driving a Toyota hatchback on Church St just after midnight.

When roadside breath tested she blew .068 and was charged with low-range drink driving.

The second, a 20-year-old man, was intercepted driving a Mitsubishi utility on Cambridge st also just after midnight.

His breath analyses sample returned a reading of .057 and he was also charged with low-range drink diving.

Both will appear in Charters Towers Magistrate Court on April 4.
