Weekly Police report

policeIt was a quieter week in crime this week in the Towers with police happy with the reduction in petty crimes around the region.

At approximately 6pm last night all emergency services attended a house fire at a York St address.

One female resident was inside the house but self-evacuated and fire crews managed to put the blaze out.

“Due to the quick actions of the fire service only minimal damage was done to one bedroom,” Sergeant Dean Cavanough said.

Sergeant Cavanough said the damage was limited to smoke and water damage.

Townsville scenes of crime detectives examined the scene this morning and as a result a 21-year-old Charters Towers man was charged with attempted arson.

He was also charged with contravening a domestic violence order.

The man was wanted by police for previous offences including a separate DVO breach, public nuisance and obstructing police.

He will face Townsville Magistrate Court tomorrow.


At approximately 12:30pm on Saturday a 32-year-old Emerald man’s vehicly was intercepted along Belyando Rd 30km from town.

Subsequent searches found cannabis and a pipe which had been used to smoke methamphetamine and he was charged for both.

Later that day the same man was arrested by police in Charters Towers for contravening a domestic violence order.

He will face all three charges in the Charters Towers Magistrate Courts in May 5.


At around 10:45pm on Saturday night a 44-year-old Charters Towers man allegedly assaulted his female passenger.

The 33-year-old woman told police after assaulting her he allegedly caused damage to the vehicle.

Police investigations are continuing.


At 9:50pm on Friday night a 32-year-old Kirwan man was intercepted on Rainbow Rd in Charters Towers.

The man was driving on a SPER suspended license and will appear in Charters Towers Magistrate Court on May 5.
