Management at the Queensland Nickel Refinery have confirmed that there were no injuries following a small explosion this morning.
Spokesperson for the organisation says the blast which carried sufficient force to blow up the roaster stack top came about from an accumulation in hydrocarbon that ignited in the roaster and increased the pressure.
The build up of gas blew off the top causing limited damage.
Early investigations have ruled out any human error.
Today’s explosion comes on the back of a report by the administration last week that raised a number of “red flag issues” relating to environmental and occupational and safety management.
The plant remains operational and investigations into the cause are continuing.
