A group of talented Greenvale women have been hard at work crafting knee throws for Charters Towers’ senior citizens.

The women, Brenda McGregor, Kareyn Yeates and Liz Davey who call themselves The Crafty Ladies, have received praise for their efforts from Mayor Frank Beveridge and portfolio councillor for Greenvale, Councillor Brian Beveridge.

The Mayor congratulated the women on their generosity.

“This is an amazing gesture from Greenvale’s Crafty Ladies group,” Cr Beveridge says.

“These knee throws they have made are just wonderful and I’m sure will be very much appreciated by the recipients.

“Personally I’m amazed at the amount of work these ladies have put into this project and to see all of these throws laid out, it certainly shows how talented they are.”

Greenvale Senior Citizens received a Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) grant from Charters Towers Regional Council that allowed Townsville-based Jane Groves to run a series of sewing workshops in Greenvale to increase the quilt and knee throw making skills of participants.

The workshops were free for the Greenvale participants because of the grant. The project has been spread over more than three years of sewing activities.

Mayor Beveridge says the workshops Jane Groves had facilitated in Greenvale were a good example of how important the RADF grants program is.

“Each year quite a number of groups and individuals from a wide variety of interests benefit from Council’s RADF grants,” he says.

“Council is continuing with its RADF grants program this financial year.”

Kareyn Yeates, one of the participants, says the whole project has been a very enjoyable experience.

“We enjoy each other’s company, we’re learnt new things and we’re very pleased that we can now donate our work to the senior citizens,” Kareyn says.

“We’ve tried to choose different colours for the throws that will suit different people. We think we have found colours that will suit men and well as the women.”

The knee throws have been donated to both Dalrymple Villa and Eventide for use by those who will benefit from the warmth of the colourful throws.
