Council support for local landholders

Charters Towers Regional Council has thrown its support behind the families and those landowners that are to be impacted by the potential acquisition of the lands by Defence within the Charters Towers Regional Council area.

CT council membersMayor Liz Schmidt says Council is pushing Defence to continue to keep Council informed and engaged where and when necessary by providing regular updates in relation to the proposed acquisition.

“Council has had limited engagement with Defence to date and there is a need for Defence to work with Council in good-faith in relation to this proposed acquisition as it will have significant impact on the Region’s economy.”

State Agriculture Minister Bill Byrne is calling on the Turnbull Government to give some clarity to graziers as the confusion over Defence Force land acquisitions continues to cause angst.

“A big question remains for the graziers in Charters Towers. This has been a shemozzle from the beginning and there are still big questions to be answered.”

State Opposition Leader Tim Nicholls today says the Prime Minister has confirmed to him, during our lengthy conversation, that he has ordered the Defence Department to scout alternative areas for expanded military training grounds but his office has been unable to shed light on such an assurance for Herveys Range graziers facing the same plight.
